Minister Imran appointed as President of LGA

Home Minister Imran Abdulla was appointed as the President of Local Government Authority's (LGA) Board on Monday.

On April 10, Maldives held the Local Council Elections after much delays due to COVID-19.

Following the oath taking ceremonies on Monday where the Local Council members and Women's Development Committee's members took office, new members were appointed to the LGA Board as well.

The member for the board were appointed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as per Article 59 (a) of the Decentralization Act.

Minister Imran’s responsibilities as President include being accountable to the Parliament on behalf of LGA.

Until the new councilors start taking office, the CEO post will continue to be filled by Fathimath Afshhan Ali who was ruling party Maldives Democratic Party’s (MDP) former Deputy Secretary General.

Council members of four cities in Maldives took their oaths on Monday. As some islands have travel restrictions placed on them due to active COVID-19 cases within them, the oath taking ceremony for these island councils will be conducted online.

However High Court has decided that presidents of Gaafu Alif Kondey's Council, Haa Alif Filladhoo Council, Laamu Maabaidhoo Council and a member of Thaa Kandoodhoo Council will take their oath at a later date
