The island council President of Kaafu atoll Maafushi island, Mohamed Musthafa, has been suspended for three months over threatening administrative staff and breaching the Public Finance Act.

Musthafa has denied any such actions, declaring that they are allegations made against him over jealousy.

The Atoll Councils have the right to suspend any island councilors and the suspension is to be informed to the Local Government Authority (LGA).

Musthafa was suspended due to complaints issued by other members.

He was elected from a by-election through the electoral ticket of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

“When I assumed office, several works were at halt, including important letters which were unanswered,” said Musthafa.

He was first suspended regarding the discussion he opened for public opinion to start developing guest houses in empty land plots. The second suspension was over his release of 100 houses for social housing.
