Secretary-General of United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon has expressed concern over the increase in political polarization in the Maldives.
In a short statement issued by Ban’s spokesperson on Friday, Ban expressed concern that increase in political polarization was making dialogue between the government and political parties difficult.
The UN chief also encouraged the government and political parties to work towards an inclusive dialogue by eliminating disputes and upholding democracy and strengthening independent institutions.
“The Secretary-General strongly encourages and will support honest inclusive dialogue,” read the statement.
Previously, the UN had sent a moderator, Tamrat Sameul, to assist conduction of party talks. Sameul came to the Maldives last July and met with all the political parties.
Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has shared their concerns with the highest Appointee of UN to the Maldives over the recent court order to delay the Local Council Elections.
Meanwhile, the government is accusing the opposition parties over the delay in holding political party talks.
The President’s Office has asked to send names of the parties' representatives for the talks. However, till date, only Jumhooree Party, ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) have submitted the names.
The government also mentioned that, despite the invitations to all parties for talks, Former President Mohamed Nasheed and Adhaalath Party leader Imran Abdulla will not be allowed to take part.
