The military has launched a search and rescue operation for two tourists that had gone missing while swimming out at Adaaran Prestige Vaadhoo Resort in Kaafu atoll.

In a statement released after midnight on Thursday, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said they had received reports of the two missing tourists at 9:00 p.m. Thursday night upon which they had immediately dispatched three Coast Guard speedboats to the area.

Details of the tourists including their nationality have not been disclosed.

According to MNDF, the missing duo were last spotted swimming at a seabed off the northern coast of the island.

Hence, the military is urging all boats travelling in that direction, including divers and people engaging in water sports, to keep an eye out for the missing tourists.

There have been previous incidents of tourists drowning or being lost at sea in the Maldives.
