The Privileges Committee of the parliament dropped out the case issued by main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to check the condition of the jailed lawmaker Ahmed Mahloof.

The issue was presented to the committee by Felidhoo MP Ahmed Marzooq, stating that Mahloof was convicted with political charges, and hence his condition needs to be checked.

According to former parliament speaker Abdulla Shahid, who is also a member of the Privileges committee, the committee chair, Gahdhoo MP Ahmed Rasheed, had not called a vote to accept the issue. Hence both MDP members, Marzooq and Shahid, have boycotted the committee.

Regarding the incident, Shahid accused the parliament majority leading ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) saying that the parliament is now run in much the same manner as a state office.

“He [chair of committee] didn’t even ask for a vote and dismissed the issue saying it cannot be looked into."

It has been three months since Mahloof was sentenced to prison and his health has been deteriorating due to severe allergies. In the meantime, his doctors have also advised to take medical treatment from abroad. However, a conclusion hasn’t been made on the matter yet.

Mahloof was first sentenced to four months and 24 days in prison after the Criminal Court found him guilty of obstructing police officers during an opposition protest in April.

A week later he received a further six months for pushing police barricades and entering a restricted area during a protest in March last year.
