Religiously conservative Adhaalath Party has decided to endorse four Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidates contesting in the upcoming Parliamentary Elections, slated for April 6.
MDP had previously withdrawn candidates and conceded the constituencies of Mahibadhoo in Alif Dhaal Atoll and Nilandhoo in Kaafu Atoll, to Adhaalath Party.
President of Adhaalath Party and Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdulla, announced the party's decision to support MDP candidates at the reception held in Billabong High International School to campaign for Fathuhulla Ahmed as the candidate for Faresmaathoda constituency.
Furthermore, Minister Imran called for all Adhaalath Party members to comply with supporting MDP members. He expressed his belief that relations between the two parties will be further enhanced.
Moreover, the minister iterated that the joint efforts of MDP and Adhaalath would result in full support for the current administration in the Parliamentary Elections.
Speaking at the same reception, President of MDP and former President Mohamed Nasheed expressed happiness that opportunities have been presented for MDP and Adhaalath Party to work together for a long duration of time. He further expressed support for Adhaalath, describing the party as comprising of capable members.
In accordance to the talks that were previously held between the two parties about Mahibadhoo being one of the constituencies MDP would not contest for, MDP had withdrawn candidate for the constituency.
Additionally, MDP considered conceding to Adhaalath the constituencies of Vaikaradhoo, Makunudhoo, Kaashidhoo, Milandhoo and South Fuvahmulah. However, MDP has not withdrawn the candidates they selected for these constituencies.
MDP is contesting for 85 constituencies in the upcoming elections.
