The treaty aims to promote equity and fairness, tackle environmental degradation, combat climate change, promote sustainability, and prevent biodiversity loss in the high seas.
Maldives Permanent Representative to the UN Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed signed the treaty on behalf of Maldives today.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim shared a post on social media X stating that "it is a historical breakthrough and key milestone towards conservation and sustainable use of our ocean resources".
Maldives is the 92nd UN member country to sign this treaty.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer said in a post on X that signing the treaty makes evident the high priority President Dr Mohamed Muizzu places in protecting ocean resources.
The cabinet made the decision to sign this treaty on February 11. Parliament approved the decision on May 14.
