The Elections Commission (EC) of the Maldives has stated that police are uncooperative in the ongoing investigation of the counterfeit forms submitted by local political parties requesting new membership.

Members of the commission were summoned in front of the Committee on Independent Bodies of Maldives Parliament on Tuesday, June 27 where its member Ali Nashath confirmed of his presence during the last meeting between the commission and Maldives Police Service.

He had claimed that the local law enforcement authority lacked proper equipment to corroborate the evidence for authenticity and validity.

"We were undertaking two processes. First was to send the counterfeit forms to the police, and the second was to send all the forms for which complaints have been lodged to the local authority. However, the understanding we both had come to was cease sending of the forms," Nashath said.

While speaking about the issue, the Committee's chairperson Rozaina Adam who is the sitting MP for Meedhoo constituency stressed on the serious criminal nature of sign and fingerprint forgery or theft.

She further stressed that a fine against party registrar was "the most comprehensive action" given the severity of the offense. She instead proposed fining the actual individual forging the signature or fingerprint.
