President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assured the public that a toll system will not be introduced for the Sinamalé Bridge until the economic situation of the country and its people improves.

The president's statement was made via X (formerly Twitter) in response to public concerns over the inclusion of a Sinamalé bridge toll study in the 'Maléfahi' programme launched Wednesday night.

In his tweet, he said that collecting toll fees from the bridge is not his policy and that the study was included in the 'Maléfahi' programme with the intention of providing technical advice to him on the matter.

"Even if toll collection is suggested in the technical advice, [I] assure [the public] that toll collection will not be implemented until the city's roads are fully upgraded, the parking issues are adequately resolved and the economic situation of the country and people are improved," he said.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation plans to commence the study on establishing the toll collection system by next month.
