The President's office said that the decision to install and monitor marine vessels through tracking devices was taken to address the widespread issue of drug sale and trafficking across the nation.
The government has decided to install "Vessel Tracking Devices" on marine vessels to systematically monitor them, aiming to combat the sale and trafficking of narcotics throughout the nation.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu made this decision during a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday following discussions on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, according to the President's Office.
The President's Office stated that the decision to install and monitor marine vessels through tracking devices supports the anti-drug operations conducted by the Maldives Police Service, addressing the widespread issue of drug sale and trafficking across the nation.
In addition, following the Cabinet's recommendation, President Muizzu has decided to revise the Sea Vessel Safety Regulation to enforce the mandatory installation of tracking devices on all marine vessels.
President Muizzu said that monitoring will be conducted through the collaboration of the Maldives Police Service's Maritime Operations Centre and the Maldives National Defence Force's Maritime Rescue Coordination.
