Amendment proposed to require parliament approval for political appointee and ministry total

An amendment to the Constitution has been proposed which seeks to add a requirement for incoming governments to approve the total number of ministries that will be formed, as well the total number of political appointees.

North Galolhu constituency MP Eva Abdulla has proposed an amendment to the Constitution which seeks to add a requirement for incoming governments to approve the total number of ministries that will be formed, as well the total number of political appointees.

The proposed amendment concerns Article 116 of the Constitution. It states that the number of ministries and their areas of work must be submitted to parliament for approval within 7 days of a government establishing ministries.

The amendment states that the parliament can then provide their opinions and advice to the government regarding the ministries and their areas of work.

It goes on to say that within a period of 14 days from the formation of the ministries, the President must submit details of the number of political appointees necessary to conduct the work in each of these ministries, which must then presented for parliamentary approval.
