Opposition Party The Democrats have claimed that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's actions in reappointing the cabinet ministers who were rejected by the Parliament is disrespectful to the Constitution.

The parliament voted on cabinet approval in yesterday's sitting, rejecting 3 out of 22 cabinet ministers.

The three rejected cabinet members are Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed and Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

Just hours after the parliament's vote, the President reappointed all three of them to their previous cabinet positions, holding a ceremony at the President's Office where Supreme Court Judge HusnuSuood officiated over their oath taking.

The Democrats released a state condemning the President's actions. They stated that reappointing cabinet members rejected by the Parliament is contemptuous towards the Constitution. The statement further claimed that names of rejected individuals in the cabinet who have been reappointed cannot be resubmitted to parliament for approval.

"An individual who was refused parliamentary approval cannot, while being caught between the capacity of the Attorney General and his own personal prejudices, issue legal advice and orders outside of the boundaries of the Constitution, or represent the State," it reads.

The Democrats called on the President to refrain from undermining the Constitution, global democratic norms, and the fundamentals of separation of powers in a State.
