The Addu City Council has initiated efforts to illuminate the entire Addu Link Road for the first time.

Since its official inauguration in 2003 during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the entire length of the road lacked streetlights and had only concentrated lighting in specific areas.

During the Addu City Council's meeting on Monday evening, September 4, Mayor Ali Nizar said that streetlights have been installed and are now operational from Hithadhoo Stadium to Addu Police Academy.

"I would like to inform you that the Addu Link Road was lit last evening. We are actively working to light up the entire link road by the end of September," Nizar added. He said that the road will be lit up to Hankede, but the section of the road connecting to Maradhoo will not be illuminated.

The council has begun installing and operating streetlights on the link road following growing public complaints.

The road was developed under a USD 7.9 million loan from Islamic Development Bank and Asian Development Bank.

The road was developed by Horgaard and Shulz, a consortium between companies from Denmark and Lebanon. Renowned New Zealand civil architect, John Smart, was responsible for the planning and design of the road.
