President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided to establish a digital identity system in the Maldives.

According to the President's Office, the decision to establish the digital identity system was made after discussions with the cabinet regarding a paper submitted by the Ministry of Technology.

The cabinet has made further decisions regarding the establishment of a system in the National Resilience and Recovery Plan.

This includes empowering the owner of the identity under the system and establishing it as a platform to provide official information relating to the owner of the identity with their consent. The service is also developed and managed jointly by NCIT and The Department of National Registration (DNR) for state institutions and state-owned companies.

In addition, the identity management system used by DNR is upgraded to a modern biometric system and a contactless smart identity card system with a new numbering system is developed and managed jointly by NCIT and DNR. The cabinet also decided to identify further work needed to open up the digital identity platform to the private sector.
