The government has proposed to seek the parliament's approval for the appointment of Khadheeja Najeeha, who has an extensive career in foreign services, as the new ambassador of Maldives to Pakistan.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's letter requesting the appointment of Najeeha as ambassador to Pakistan has been included in the agenda for today's parliament sitting.
In addition to Pakistan, the government has submitted a proposal to seek parliament's approval for the appointment of new envoys to Bangladesh and the UAE. The parliament referred the names to a committee for scrutiny during yesterday's session.
Expressing concern over the government's term ending on November 17, interim spokesperson Mohamad Firzul said yesterday that with only a few days remaining for the change of government, actions such as the appointment of ambassadors could pose challenges for the incoming administration.
"It will cause difficulties. We request that such conduct not be undertaken," Firuzal said.
In response, the government said that it had submitted the request to appoint new envoys to Bangladesh and the UAE prior to last month's presidential elections.
Midhfa Naeem, with extensive experience in foreign services, was recommended for appointment as the ambassador to the UAE on August 24. On September 5, a motion was introduced in the parliament to replace the current Maldives' ambassador to Bangladesh, Shiruzimath Sameer, with Shiuneen Rasheed.
Both letters were included in the agenda for yesterday's parliament sitting after several days of the parliament functioning poorly.
However, the exact date on which the government submitted the request to parliament for approval to appoint Najeeha as the Maldives ambassador to Pakistan is not clear.
