Attorney General (AG) Mohamed Anil, on Wednesday, ordered relevant government and state institutions to provide equal opportunity and necessary protection for all presidential candidates and running mates ahead of the upcoming presidential elections.
In letters to the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure, Ministry of Home Affairs, Maldives Police Service and Public Service Media (PSM), AG ordered the government and state institutions to ensure fair campaigning opportunities for all presidential candidates and running mates despite the official announcement of joint candidates by the Elections Commission (EC).
Whilst the AG has ordered for free and equal campaigns for all political parties ahead of the elections, opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim ‘Ibu’ Mohamed Solih and his team had encountered two attempted assaults at the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale during their door-to-door campaign on Tuesday.
According to the statement by the AG Office, the four institutions were ordered to provide security and protection along with equal opportunity to campaign for all candidates who have announced their candidacy for the upcoming elections.
The AG further ordered the housing ministry and PSM to ensure equal land and property for campaign purposes, and equal airtime to allow coverage for presidential candidates of all parties.
Amidst obstructions to the opposition campaign, the government has been slammed for inequality in campaign opportunities to presidential candidates ahead of the upcoming elections slated for September.
