Former Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shareef congratulated the government on its victory over Mauritius at the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in determining the geographical area that belongs to the Maldives south of the country near Chagos.
Dr. Shaheed, an expert in foreign affairs who served as the Foreign Minister of the Maldives in two governments, praised the court's decision for aligning with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's letter to Mauritius regarding the issue of the geographical area.
He congratulated Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath for their success via Twitter.

Dr. Shareef appealed to give credit where it was due and wished the Maldives continued success in its upcoming EEZ cases.
At the hearing held on Friday, ITLOS allocated the disputed overlapping territory of 95,000 square kilometers between Maldives and Mauritius, providing each country with a 200-mile continental shelf. Maldives has been granted 47,232 square kilometers while Mauritius has been given 45,331 square kilometers
Mauritius received 0.960 square kilometers for every square kilometer received by Maldives.
