Tourist arrivals up 12 percent by April end

The Maldives saw a 12 percent increase in tourist arrivals by the end of April, statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism have revealed.

According to the ministry, 119,713 tourists arrived in the Maldives last month. Whilst 529,816 tourists have visited the country this year thus far, the figure was at 478,827 during the same period last year.

Tourists from Europe – mainly with eight percent from the United Kingdom, nine percent from Italy and eight percent from Germany – continue to dominate the country's tourism market with 302,297 tourists until May in 2018.

China is the top market from Asia and the Pacific, contributing over 40 percent of the visitors from the region.

With an increase in tourist arrivals by the end of April, the tourist bed occupancy rate of 2018 also increased by 14.9 percent compared to the period last year.

Currently there are 129 resorts, 14 hotels, 428 guesthouses and 146 liveaboards operating in the Maldives.
