Local telecom giant Dhiraagu held its 29th annual general meeting last week with the participation of over 100 of its shareholders. Dhiraagu celebrated its achievements over the past year and the passage of all presented resolutions at the general meeting.

According to the statistics by Dhiraagu, the company made MVR 2.6 million in revenue in the year 2017 with MVR 898 million as profit after tax.

The first resolution passed at the meeting was to declare a full year dividend of MVR 14.37 per share amounting to the total dividend for the year 2016, which comprised of MVR 5.92 per share paid out as interim dividend in 2016 and MVR 8.45 per share to be approved as final dividend and payable to shareholders in the Dhiraagu register.

In May 2017, Dhiraagu unveiled its brand new identity with changes made to their principal colour, slogan and logo. The new logo displays a slight variation of its signature hand print since 2005. The new brand identity, according to the telecommunication company, represents a vibrant outlook with its change of principal colour to orange.

Dhiraagu's Chairperson Mohamed Ashmalee stated that improving the quality of service was an ongoing effort at Dhiraagu, and assured that the company would continue to bring the latest technology and improve services across the country.

In 2017, Dhiraagu took several steps to enhance and digitalize their customer service. The company stepped up their Dhiraagu MyAccount service with the introduction of the Dhiraagu Mobile App, which allows convergence of all postpaid services within one mobile. The app allows customers to manage all their services more conveniently.

2017 marked a successful year for Dhiraagu with the launch of Dhiraagu TV, innovative DIY mobile plan ‘Mamen’, and Dhiraagu Pay.

Dhiraagu TV was launched in April 2017 as the Maldives’ first nationwide IPTV network. Dhiraagu TV provides customers with a wide range of high quality TV programming including news, current affairs, sports, movies, music and children’s channels. ‘Mamen’ is a plan where users get to decide how much data, voice or text messaging they need. Mamen is based around the Mamen app, where customers have the freedom to set their own plans. Dhiraagu also undertook a free music streaming initiative targeted at the youth market. Dhiraagu Pay, the company’s new mobile money service was launched in October. Dhiraagu Pay provides customers with a safe, convenient and easily accessible way to make everyday financial transactions.

Dhiraagu was the first network in the country to provide 100 percent mobile broadband coverage to the entire country. The company’s Fibre to the Home (FTTH) and 4G LTE initiative has been extended to the outer atolls to provide customers with faster speeds, enhanced quality and wider connections in the atolls. While FTTH was launched in the Greater Malé region in 2015, the company has successfully extended FTTH to over 38 islands covering more than 65 percent of all households. In the past year, Dhiraagu extended 4G coverage to 78 residential islands and 30 resorts which covers 85 percent of the population.

Dhiraagu will celebrate 30 years of glory in the telecommunications industry in the Maldives this October.
