Surveys for the development of an airport in the island of Nilandhoo in Faafu atoll will commence within the next fortnight, announced Faafu atoll council.

The surveys will be carried out by China Aerospace Construction Group Ltd of China.

Faafu atoll council’s president Abdul Hameed Mohamed stated that the council is currently preparing accommodation and transportation for the survey team as requested by the government.

“The team will head to Nilandhoo within two weeks, apparently,” he said.

Abdul Hameed declared that development of an airport in Nilandhoo, as promised by the government, will highly ease transportation for the residents of Nilandhoo and other islands of the atoll.

The Regional Airports department of the tourism ministry had requested Faafu atoll council’s full cooperation for China Aerospace Construction Group’s survey team.

Moreover, the department had requested the island council of Dhaalu atoll Meedhoo island, close to Nilandhoo, to make arrangements for the survey team to use survey control points in Meedhoo should such circumstances arise.

In its letter to Faafu atoll council, Regional Airports had also assured that Aerospace Construction Group will bear all the expenses of the surveys.

The people of Faafu atoll currently rely on the domestic airport in Alif Dhaalu atoll Maamigili island for air transportation.
