Velana International Airport processed 34,500 tons of cargo in the first half of the year, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). Of this, 25,262 tons were imports, while 2,432 tons were exports—marking a 6% increase in exports compared to the same period last year.
Additionally, 6,879 tonnes of transshipment cargo were handled, reflecting a 12% rise. This includes 5,621 tonnes of air-to-air cargo and 1,258 tonnes of sea-to-air cargo.
Most of the cargo was transported via Afcom Cargo, which operates three weekly flights. Other carriers handling cargo include Fly Vaayu, MJets, and Qatar Cargo.
The airport’s new cargo terminal, opened in January last year as part of the 2018 expansion project, has an annual capacity of 120,000 tons. The facility includes a three-storey office complex with 55 offices for airline cargo services and brokers.
