The Maldives has leased two islands to NIMS Medicity of India for 50 years to develop a medical teaching facility and genetic research centre.

Indian media cited NIMS Medicity’s Managing Director Faizal Khan that the company will establish teaching facilities to advance the health sector of the Maldives. The plans include development of a Maldives Space Research Organisation, according to the website.

MD Faizal stated that NIMS will invest USD 25 million to develop the medical teaching facility and genetic research centre. He said that the Maldivian government has permitted the company to mortgage the island to take loans for the project.

Media reports add that an aviation academy, marine engineering college and a holistic treatment centre will also be developed in the two islands.

Noorul Islam International (NIMS) is also the contractor of Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, the 150-bed multi-specialty tertiary hospital being developed in Haa Dhaal atoll Kulhudhuffushi island. The project was awarded to NIMS on June 19 for a period of 50 years.
