Maldives’ national carrier Maldivian’s eighth addition to its seaplane fleet will arrive in less than a week, announced the airline’s operator Island Aviation Services (IAS) on Sunday.

IAS’ head of administration Ali Nashaath told Mihaaru that the aircraft departed from Canada for the archipelago on Saturday.

“It will take around five days to reach the Maldives,” he said.

The newest addition to Maldivian’s seaplane fleet is an aircraft that was first used 17 years ago in 1999 by the then Maldivian Air Taxi (now Trans Maldivian Airways). However, Nashaath assured that the plane features top security despite being an old model.

“We checked its security measures before acquiring it and conducted all the necessary repairs with the permission of Civil Aviation Authority. We guarantee that all the security features of the plane are top notch,” he declared.

According to aircraft website “Plane Logger”, the seaplane had been in use again in the Maldives in 2004 after a Canadian firm had acquired it.

Maldivian had acquired the aircraft again after it had been in use in three other destinations.

Maldivian’s seaplane fleet features the model DHC-6 Twin Otter series, which are 15-passenger seaplanes. The airline currently boasts six aircrafts of this model.
