Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed said last night that Maldives will not join a program of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and that instead, Maldives will solve its own economic issues.

This was said by the Minister is response to queries by Mihaaru regarding rumours circulating on social media that Maldives' economy is in critical condition, and the government has decided to participate in an IMF program in an attempt to alleviate said issues.

Minister Saeed alleged that the former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration had made expenses in an extremely irresponsible manner. However, he assured that this government will undertake reform measures to undo the damage those actions had caused. He confirmed that no other parties would be involved in these efforts.

"Maldives will not participate in programs of any specific organization. We will not even join an IMF program. Everything that is done, will be done by Maldives," Saeed asserted.

Saeed assured that the economy will move forward owing to the steps the government is taking to raise the country out of the difficult economic status it currently is in. He said that as Maldives economy increases by 5.5 percent, the number of tourist arrivals is also on the rise. In light of all this, Saeed confirmed that the government is confident they can revive the economy.
