Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has announced today that a special tourism promotion event is scheduled to be held in China in May this year. The corporation has called on interested companies to apply for participation.

MMPRC said that the event, titled "ITB China 2024" will be held from May 27 to 29. It will be held at the Shanghai World Expo and Convention Centre.

Interested parties must send in applications before 3pm, January 21. Applications can be submitted through a dedicated google form.

MMPRC said they were seeking applications now so as to gauge interest in the fair prior to booking the event venue.

The office assured that all interested parties will be given the opportunity to participate in the fair. They described the fair as an opportunity for tourism field professionals to showcase their specific productions and experiences.

MMPRC said that China ranked highest on the Maldives' tourist arrivals list pre-pandemic. In 2023, 172,163 Chinese tourists visited the Maldives.

During the recent state visit to China, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held deliberations with a high level delegation from the country on how to increase tourist arrivals from China to Maldives. He also shared that an agreement has been reached through which China's Xiamen Airline will conduct direct flights to Maldives.

The government aims to raise the number of tourist arrivals from China to a value 30 to 40 percent higher than it was before the Covid 19 pandemic.
