Fenaka Corporation's new Managing Director, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed, has said that no employee of Fenaka have been laid off yet. However, the contracts of employees without a set job description will not be renewed once their contract term has expired.
Speaking with 'Mihaaru News', he said that when the contract expires and there is no work to be done at the site, the contract period of the employee will not be extended.
For example, a person hired to build a power plant or for concrete work will not have their contract renewed if the assigned work is completed.
During former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, Fenaka hired 2,000 people as "contract staff" for specific tasks. Out of these, 1,800 were employed for small-scale projects, Muaz stated.
Fenaka, under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, became one of the state-owned companies with the largest number of employees, reaching a total of 7,300. Muaz had earlier said that this number exceeded the company's staff requirements.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Central Fuvahmulah MP, Hussain Mohamed Didi, has raised concerns about the alleged laying off of Fenaka employees and has submitted an emergency motion in Parliament. The matter has been accepted and is currently under debate in parliament.
