Civil Court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit filed by the State Trading Organisation (STO) against Meridiam Services owned by a top ruling party lawmaker seeking to to recover MVR19.3 million (US$1.2 million) released as credit.

The court ruled that the complainant could not prove that the oil was released to Meridiam on credit as per the lawsuit.

STO had earlier claimed that original documents of business transactions with Meridiam had been stolen.

The theft of the documents from the STO office allegedly occurred in 2011 and was reported to police at the time.

The court ruled that as Meridiam Services disputed the authenticity of the purchase orders, delivery notices, and invoices submitted as evidence by STO, the latter could not prove the validity of the documents after the police had failed to find any evidence that there had been a robbery at the STO office.

The court had also discounted the testimonies of STO staff in its verdict in favour of the company owned by Riyaz Rasheed-- deputy parliamentary group leader of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
