The Parliament’s administration have filed a case with the police that parliament members have been offered bribes.

Communications Director of the Parliament Hassan Ziyau confirmed to Mihaaru News on Saturday that they had lodged a case with the police. However, he did not provide additional details.

The case has been submitted close to the presidential elections, while members of the newly formed political party The Democrats have been resigning to rejoin Maldives Democratic Party (MDP). The formation of The Democrats stemmed from ongoing differences of opinion within MDP, between supporters of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

Even though 14 MDP legislators had signed with The Democrats, only three of them have submitted to have their party association changed in the parliament’s registry. Two of the MPs have rejoined MDP.

North Kulhudhufushi MP Yasir Abdul Latheef and Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan are the two members who have reinstated their association with MDP. Moreover, MDP members who were part of the Kulhudhufushi Council and had initially joined The Democrats alongside Yasir have also returned to MDP.
