The High Court has dismissed the appeal filed by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) against former Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
MTCC filed a lawsuit with the Civil Court, claiming that Maumoon Abdul Gayoom must be held liable for DRP's outstanding MVR 1 million to the company. However, the lawsuit was ruled against MTCC.
Following the Civil Court's verdict, MTCC appealed the case with the first appellate court, which upheld the lower court's decision. However, the High Court ultimately dismissed the case, stating that it was appealed after the period for appeals had elapsed.
Once regarded as the largest political party, DRP was announced ineligible earlier in 2023 by the Elections Commission and confirmed its dissolution.
Despite facing dissolution, DRP is also dealing with outstanding payments owed to multiple parties.
According to the Political Parties Act, a political party's leader may be held liable for any outstanding dues created during their leadership. MTCC sought to hold Maumoon liable for DRP's debt, however, the Civil Court claimed that Maumoon was no longer the party's leader when the debt to MTCC was realized. As a result, the court ruled that he should not be held liable for the outstanding dues.
