Several members of parliament from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), who are supporters of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed's Fikuregge Dhirun "reviving an ideology" faction, have made the decision to leave the party.

Several MDP members, including MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz and former State Trading Organisation (STO) Managing Director Hussain Amru, have submitted their resignation letters to the MDP.

So far, 12 members aligned with Nasheed have submitted their resignations, following the expulsion of Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim from the party.

As a result of the leading members of the faction, ordinary members of the party who align with Nasheed have also begun filing their resignations to leave MDP. To address this situation, the faction has scheduled a press conference at 5 p.m. today to announce Nasheed's views on the matter.

The party's disciplinary committee took the decision to expel Azim from MDP due to his involvement in signing a no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and attending a press conference to protest against the government alongside opposition parties.

The Election Commission has removed Azim from the party's registry.

Nasheed criticized the committee's decision to expel Azim from the party, stating that it was a violation of MDP's regulations.

The parliamentary group has taken steps to address the actions of Azim and four other members who have violated the whip line multiple times. These members include Hassan Lateef, Ilyas Labeeb, Imthiyaz Fahmy, and Yasir Abdul Latheef.

These members had been issued expulsion warnings by the party.

Following the rift between MDP's leadership, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the party's President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, tensions increased after Nasheed's loss in the MDP presidential primary election. Nasheed said that he would not back President Solih and would propose an alternative candidate.

Nasheed also engaged in coalition discussions with Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the formation of a coalition between Nasheed and JP.

Many MDP members have decided to leave the party after actively supporting the opposition in parliament and engaging in political activities. They have expressed their intention not to support President Solih in the upcoming presidential election.

Nasheed said that the disciplinary action taken against Azim and other members was a wrongful act.

Nasheed said to Mihaaru News that the MDP disciplinary committee should only convene when summoned by Vice President Mohamed Shifaz. He further claimed that the party had violated its regulations by holding a secret committee meeting.
