The Ministry of Higher Education has reduced the repayment period for students under First Degree program who drop their academic courses without completion.
While the students were still required to repay the course fee under the previous regulations, the new amendments have shortened the repayment period to an average of 10 years. According to the revised regulations, students who drop out without any valid reason or due to failing may be subjected to legal action or be barred from further higher education offers.
Under the previous regulations, students were allowed to repay a fee of MVR 25,000 within 30 months, while the current regulations require the students to pay the same amount within two years.
- MVR 25,000 to MVR 50,000 – two years and six months
- MVR 50,000 to MVR 100,000 – three years and six months
- MVR 100,000 to MVR 200,000 – four years
- MVR 200,000 to MVR 300,000 – seven years
- MVR 300,000 to MVR 400,000 – 10 years
- MVR 400,000 to MVR 500,000 – 12 years
- MVR 500,000 and above – 15 years
- Allocating academic duration for students participating in First Degree program (students are required to submit application for the program not later than 18 months after joining academic courses)
- Program deferment period reduced to 12 months
- Determine the circumstances for switching academic programs or centers
- Establishing a timeframe for program completion to encourage students to finish their academic courses
- Inclusion of legal actions against students who do not comply in repaying the fees incurred by the state
- Inclusion of procedure to follow should the state revise the rates
