The Malé City Council has announced plans to open a temporary local market in Hulhumalé phase 2, for the upcoming month of Ramadan.

The proposal, put forth by Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at the council meeting yesterday, was approved by the members, and the decision was made, according to a statement on the council website.

Despite the government not allowing the Malé City Council to run activities in Hulhumalé, the Mayor emphasised that the area falls within the council's constituency. With a population of 10,000, it would be difficult for residents to access agricultural products from faraway locations, the Mayor noted.

Mayor Muizzu also said that the market will be run in such a way that it will generate revenue for the council while also providing convenience for the residents.

The location of the market has not yet been decided, but City Council member for Hulhumalé, Ibrahim Shujau, said that they have already discussed the matter with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). They have unofficially said that they will even offer assistance to the market, he said.

The council tried to open temporary markets in Male and Vilimalé last Ramadan as well; however they were unable to do so for various reasons.

Ramadan is set to begin on March 23.
