The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has launched an apprenticeship program in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment.
MACL said that their program comes under the national apprenticeship program launched by the government to provide employment opportunities to the youth.
Provision of employment opportunities for the youth population is a presidential promise of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The company will train 225 people over a three year period.
According to MACL, 75 people will receive training in 20 different fields during the first phase. The six-month training program will be attended by 50 MACL employees and 25 youths selected from those who applied for the apprenticeship program.
The apprenticeship program, launched in association with the ministry and Maldives National Skill Development Authority, is an MNQF Certificate 3 standard course.
The apprenticeship program was launched at a ceremony held at the Hulhulé Island Hotel (HIH) on Wednesday. MACL Deputy Managing Director Ibrahim Thoha signed on behalf of the airports company Minister of State for Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Hussain Ismail signed on behalf of the state.
MACL Deputy Managing Director Ibrahim Thoha said Velana International Airport undergoes major development projects and it is a challenge to have trained professional staff to keep pace with the structural and technological advances being brought to the airport. However, he said the initiating the apprenticeship program will resolve this challenge.
Youth Ministry's State Minister Hussain Ismail said that despite the large number of jobs available in Maldives, there is a lack of trained professionals among the youth population.
He said the government's National Apprenticeship Program will provide training and employment opportunities to those who have been excluded from the formal education system for various reasons. This would result in the increase of trained professionals in various technical fields, he said.
MACL is one of the largest state-owned company's in Maldives with over 3,500 employees.
