One of the founding members of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) and former MP Mohamed Latheef (Gogo Latheef) has passed away.

Latheef, who lives in Sri Lanka, passed away after an extended illness. He has not been involved in any political work in the recent years.

Senior MDP officials and members of the party have expressed their grief and condolences over Latheef's passing. Latheef had played a pivotal rold in the formation of MDP 17 years ago. He was among the first to sign up for the party.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed grief over Latheef's passing.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mohamed Latheef, a founding member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who worked hard to bring democracy to the Maldives. May Almighty Allah grant him eternal peace and give patience to his family," the president said in a Tweet.

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has also said in a Tweet that Latheef was a kind, honest, loyal, thoughtful and brave man in addition to being a good partner in many political matters.

Chairperson of MDP Fayyaz Ismail tweeted that Latheef played a big role in bringing MPD into existence and has worked hard for the human rights of the Maldivian people.

Latheef served as a member of the Parliament in 1989. He was released from his post following his arrest for political reformation.
