Over 125,000 tourists arrived in Maldives in May of this year, setting a new record for the most number of arrivals in a month.
This is more than the amount of visitors Maldives welcomed in May of 2019; that year Maldives welcomed 103,000 visitors.
India is currently Maldives' biggest market. Most of the visitors come from India with the United Kingdom following in second. Russia is the third country with most visitors to Maldives. However, since the war between Russia and Ukraine started, the number of visitors from Russia has seen a stark decrease.
Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom said this is a period Maldives usually sees a decrease in visitors, and noted that is now changing now.
"There is a sense that the current seasonal tourism in the Maldives is changing. We look forward to improving Maldivian tourism in the future," he said.
"There is a sense that the current seasonal tourism in the Maldives is changing. It appears Maldives' tourism will improve in the future," he said.
Dr. Mausoom said that he was pleased to be creating new records in the Maldivian tourism sector at a time when the world economy was struggling with the Russia-Ukraine war. He said Maldivian tourism will expand as the global economy recovers and the situation in other countries improves.
A total of 680,000 tourists have arrived in the Maldives so far this year. This is a six percent decrease compared to the same period in 2019. A total of 730,000 tourists arrived in the Maldives in the first five months of that year.
Last year, 1.3 million tourists arrived in the Maldives. The government aims to attract 1.6 million tourists to the Maldives this year.
