The President's Office has revealed that 1,000 land plots from Hulhumale' Phase two will not be up for sale and land will be provided free of charge from the Greater Male' area.
The President's Office has revealed that land will not be sold in response to a letter sent by Male' Mayor Dr. Muizz to the president on February 22. Dr. Muizz stated his concerns over the governments plan to sell land to residents of Male' in the letter.
The Presidents Office stated in the letter, at least 1,000 land plots from Hulhumale', 2,000 land plots from Gulhifalhu and part of the land reclaimed from Giraavaru lagoon will be given to Male' residents but no mentions of land sales were in Ibrahim Solih's presidential address.
In his presidential address to the People's Majlis on February 3, the President said that the burden on Male' city residents in terms of housing is huge and that there are more discussions than actions taken regarding this matter. The president pledged to address the issue before the end of his term.
The letter also stated that Male' City Council's proposals regarding the lease of land from Hulhumale' have been brought to the attention of the Housing Ministry.
In the letter sent to the President, Dr. Muizzu requested to provide free land to the people of Male' as the constitution states that everyone has equal rights to housing.
HDC's announcement to sell 60 land plots in Hulhumale' Phase two at a high price has been criticized by many. Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam has announced plans to provide between 3,000 to 4,000 land plots from Hulhumale' and Gulhifalhu to the people of Male'.
