Maldives received 164,000 tourists in December

Statistics show that over 164,000 tourists arrived in Maldives in December of 2021.

December is the month Maldives records the highest amount of tourists each year.

A total of 1.3 million tourists arrived to Maldives in 2021, with the highest number of visitors from India. Russia and Germany follow as the second and third country on that ranking.

Even though Maldives' tourism had a successful 2021 exceeding the initial goal of 1 million arrivals, the nation did suffer set backs as well when its borders had to closed for a second time in two years in May, due to high Covid numbers. The borders were re-opened three months later, in July.

Since then, tourist arrivals continued to increase every month after the borders were re-opened.

Tourism in Maldives had enjoyed a growth of 70 percent compared to that of 2020. Compared to pre-pandemic times, Maldives' tourist arrivals in 2021 was four percent less than that of 2019. Over 1.7 million tourists arrived in Maldives that year.

The state budget for 2021 estimates that Maldives will be able to welcome 1.6 million tourists in 2022. However Tourism Ministry predicts that the nation may be able to welcome 2 million tourists if Covid cases does not worsen.

Maldives has a over 53,000 operations beds available to tourists out of the total of 57,000 beds across the country, including resorts, guesthouses and safaris. There are 167 resorts operating in the Maldives, while more than 800 guesthouses are currently in operation in 90 islands.
