The Maldives has awarded the project to establish an automated cargo handling system in its main airport to a Singapore firm.

Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) and Singapore’s SATS Ltd signed the agreement to establish the cargo operations system COSYS in Velana International Airport at a special ceremony held in MACL’s head office last Thursday.

MACL’s Managing Director Adil Moosa stated that COSYS, which is designed to link airlines and Customs, will increase efficiency of cargo operations. The system can live track goods carried in and out of the Maldives via air transport, store information, clear cargo and oversee procedures of airline bills online.

COSYS is a joint production of Singapore’s SATs Ltd, which manages the country’s Changi Airport and is a stake holder of the Maldives’ inflight caterer, and NIIT Technologies of India. The COSYS cargo operations system is used in sixteen airports of Asia and South America.
