Ministry of Economic Development opened its new branch in the southernmost atoll of Addu along with a business centre on Sunday.

Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)’s CEO Mohamed Junaid and member of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid were the chief guests of the ceremony to officially unveil the branch established in Hithadhoo ward of Addu.

The minister declared that most of the services of the Economic Ministry in capital Male will be available from its southern branch as well. He also announced that the government will provide the ministry’s online services at the Addu branch within a couple of months.

Upcoming services at Economic Ministry’s Addu branch include a Transport Authority unit, Immigration Department unit and Labour Relations Authority.

“This decision [to open a branch in Addu] by President Yameen is to provide government services equally without discriminating between atolls with large populations and small populations,” said the minister.

The Economic Ministry also commenced a forum on business opportunities for women in Addu on Sunday while a meeting was held with the businessmen of the atoll later that night at the Equatorial Convention Centre in Gan island.
