Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has opened applications to participate in the upcoming largest travel fair in the north of Europe to promote tourism of the Maldives.

“Matka Nordic Travel Fair 2017” will be held from January 19 to 22 in Helsinki, Finland. MATATO will accept applications until December 10 from local travel agents and tourism sector companies that wish to represent the Maldives at the fair.

The Nordic Fair is a major platform to expand travel and trade to the northern European markets, providing the opportunity to showcase the latest products of the industry and form connections with renowned tourism firms and suppliers.

MATATO stated that the Maldives will be promoted to the world’s third largest travel market via the Nordic Fair.

The north of Europe boasts a population of 25 million including countries such as Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. However, the region is known as one of the most liberal tourist markets in the world, spending over USD 20 billion annually on travel.

The official statistics of the Ministry of Tourism shows that 12,427 tourists to the Maldives hailed from northern Europe last month, which is an increase of 16.6 percent from last year’s record of 10,661. The total number of visitors from northern Europe so far this year had also spiked by 12.9 percent with 109,363 tourists.
