Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) revealed on Monday that a total of 52 cargo containers were cleared at Male' Commercial Harbour and Hulhumale' Container Terminal the day before.
According to MPL, the bulk of the cleared cargo belonged to 5,580 rice sacks which weighed around five tonnes.
Moreover, MPL cleared nine varieties of perishable cargo, including 1,365 egg cartons, 1,020 onion bags, 165 cabbage bags, 140 potato bags, 44 watermelon bags, 63 banana bunches, 264 pineapple cartons, 360 tomato cartons and 32 mango cartons.
In addition to these food products, MPL also cleared 38 plywood bundles.
Maldives Customs Services and MPL have assured that there will be no delay in clearing and issuing imported cargo to shops even amidst the lockdown imposed on the Greater Male' area to contain the spread of COVID-19.
However, the lockdown has resulted in a significant decrease of the total number of containers cleared per day, resulting in a 75 percent drop compared to the pre-pandemic average.
