Exports jump 21%, import drops 4% in Jan: Customs

Maldives Customs Service revealed that exports increased by 21 percent while imports dropped by four in the month of January, compared to the same period last year.

According to Customs' monthly import-export statistics, goods worth MVR 420 million were exported last month, while January 2019 recorded exports of MVR 347 million.

Meanwhile, imports stood at MVR 3.8 billion in January, compared to the goods worth MVR 4 billion imported last year.

Customs further revealed that MVR 272 million was collected as duties, fines and other fees during the previous month, which is a 10 percent decline from January 2019.

The bulk of January's imports consisted of food products, followed by construction materials. The majority of exports were sourced from the United Arab Emirates.
