Maldives breaks record with 1.7 mil tourist arrivals in 2019

Ministry of Tourism revealed that a record number of tourist arrivals were recorded in 2019.

According to the ministry, Maldives Immigration confirmed that 1.7 million tourists arrived last year. The figure represents a 14.7 percent increase compared to 2018.

As per statistics, the most number of tourists arrived from Europe, followed by the Asia Pacific region.

Overall, 833,904 tourists arrived from Europe, which is 49 percent of the total. Compared to 2018, arrivals from Europe saw a 14.8 percent increase.

With 705,117 tourists or 41.4 percent of the total, arrivals from the Asia Pacific rose 13.5 percent compared to 2018.

While 84,793 tourists arrived from America last year, this represents a 23 percent increase from last year.

Furthermore, 60,003 tourists visited Maldives from Middle East and 18,698 from the Africa region.

Considering individual countries, China leads with the highest arrivals, followed by India. This was followed by Italy in third place and Germany at fourth place.

On November 24, the government achieved the target of 1.5 million tourists set for 2019. For 2020, a target of 2 million tourists is set by the government.
