A truck driver was arrested in the island of Huraa in Kaafu atoll on Sunday after an accident where a three year old boy was run over on Friday, leaving him critical with a ruptured liver and severe internal bleeding.

The boy had been rushed to capital Male to be admitted at state hospital Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) that day itself before he was flown to India on Saturday for further treatment.

The court had granted a ten-day house arrest period for the 50 year old truck driver while police continues to investigate the case.

The boy’s mother said earlier that she had left her son under the care of her nine year old daughter while she went on a jog. She had described the truck driver as a kindly man compassionate towards children who always took the kids out on rides on his truck in the evenings for their amusement.

Huraa Island Council’s president Esa Ahmed cited the boy’s family that his condition has worsened since reaching India, thus delaying further operations. He added that the doctors said the boy would need to be admitted for a month in the hospital.
