Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) announced a new record on runway movements at Velana International Airport (VIA) on December 1.
According to MACL, VIA recorded total 219 movements that day, of which 102 were international flights while 121 were domestic. The airport also recorded three AD-Hoc or unscheduled flight operations.
VIA's previous record was 219 runway movements last February.
The month of December usually marks high air traffic and movements at the main airport of Maldives, due to increase in international flights ahead of Christmas and New Year's. Domestic travels also spike as the twelfth month comprises of the year-end school holidays before January brings in the new academic year.
Maldives is working to increase number of operations and tourist arrivals, with the development of a larger runway and new passenger terminal. Construction of the latter is currently ongoing.
