President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih discussed the promotion of renewable energy technologies in Maldives during a meeting with Kokyo Tatemono Company Ltd's CEO Kohei Yamashita and Professor Tsumoru Shintake from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST).

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the president’s ongoing official visit to Japan.

Discussions at the meeting centred on expanding the pilot project launched in Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives to harness electricity from surf waves. The project is jointly carried out by Kokyo, OIST and the Ministry of Environment.

During the meeting, Professor Tsumoru invited Maldivian postgraduate students to undertake further education and doctorate students to initiate research at OIST.

In response, President Solih expressed gratitude to the professor and OIST, highlighting the necessity of Maldivians being exposed to research on renewable energy technologies and conducting such studies.

The president also assured the administration’s continued support for the pilot project in Kandooma and noted that introducing renewable energy solutions in Maldives was practical and sustainable.
