The Maldives is taking part in the largest tourism fair in India.

In a statement released Tuesday, Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) announced its participation in the Bharat International Tourism Bazaar (BITB). Joining MATATO at the fair are a number of resorts, travel agents and airlines of the Maldives.

Hosted in alliance with ITB Berlin, the largest travel and tourism exhibition in the world, the three-day BTIB features over 500 tourism companies from the South Asian neighbour and other states. This year marks the first BTIB fair, held in Indian capital New Delhi, and serves to connect tourism entrepreneurs and introduce opportunities in the market.

India is the fastest progressing market for the Maldives tourism. Statistics show that 34,884 tourists to the archipelago had hailed from India by the end of last July, which is an increase of 21.5 percent from the previous year.

The Maldives has stepped up efforts to increase promotions in India with roadshows held in some major cities as well as adding more flight operations to India. While the national airline Maldivian already operates to various destinations of the Asian giant, local aviation giant Mega Maldives is also preparing to commence flights to New Delhi.

The Maldives has been promoting at a number of international tourism fairs recently. Its main tourism promotion body Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) had participated in travel shows held in Japan, France and the Maldives’ largest market of China this year.
