On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, under the theme 'Air Pollution', a special 'Mask Challenge' is set to take from June 3-20.
A circular released by the Ministry of Environment urged members of the public as well as civil society organizations, government institutions and private companies, to take part in the challenge and reduce their carbon emissions to #BeatAirPollution.
Moreover, for the challenge, the Environment Ministry requested individuals to share pictures of their actions taken to mitigate climate change, on social media with United Nations Environment and the ministry tagged.
- Turn off lights and electronics when not in use.
- Purchase energy efficient appliances.
- Avoid using single-use plastics.
- Plant trees.
In order to reduce one's carbon footprint, individuals can walk, cycle or utilize electric vehicles for transportation, recycle non-organic trash and compost organic food items.
World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972. Over 100 countries celebrate the day annually.
