More than 200 schools across Maldives commenced their first term holidays as the academic first semester concluded on Thursday.

According to the Ministry of Education's academic calendar, the second semester will begin on June 9.

There are roughly 73,000 students enrolled through pre-school to Grade 12 in Maldives.

Moreover, this year's school holiday coincides with Eid al-Fitr. The government will be closed from June 4 and re-open on the ninth.

Last year's academic year was considered a success with a total of 81,027 students enrolled across the country. Notably, public schools began using tablets in the second semester, fulfilling the Ministry of Education’s plan to digitalise schools.

While the electoral pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih placed special focus on education, the 2019 state budget allocates MVR 3 billion to the education sector.

Some of the pledges include government funding of undergraduate degrees and the provision of breakfast in public schools.

The state budget allocates MVR 50 million to fulfil the vow, which will cover 212 schools when fully implemented.

Under the pilot study of the breakfast programme, 25 schools now provide free breakfast to its students. One school from each atoll and five schools in the capital were chosen to take part in the pilot, which is intended to cater to 14,720 students.

However, the administration is prepared to begin distributing breakfast to every school in the nation at the start of the second semester.
