Priority will be given to the poor and needy in distributing the 50 tonnes of dates gifted by Saudi Arabia to Maldives, announced the Ministry of Islamic Affairs on Thursday.

According to local media Mihaaru, Deputy Minister Ahmedhullah Jameel revealed that the government has tasked local councils with distributing the dates Saudi Arabia donated ahead of the upcoming Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.

He stated that the shipments will be handed over to the councils, in accordance with the number of people in need, registered in each island.

The ministry received the donation from the Saudi government on Tuesday. Following the ceremony, Islamic Minister Dr Ahmed Zahir noted that the amount was not enough for the whole population of Maldives. However, he expressed hopes that other countries will also gift dates to Maldives, assuring that such donations will also be immediately distributed.

Saudi Arabia annually gifts dates to Maldives in time for Ramadan. Some other nations in the Middle East have also made similar donations, such as the United Arab Emirates.
